Hurricane Michael killed at least 16 people in Florida, most of them in the coastal county that took a direct hit from the storm, state emergency authorities said Tuesday. That's in addition to at least 10 deaths elsewhere across the South.
The scope of the storm's fury became clearer after nearly a week of missing-persons reports and desperate searches of the Florida Panhandle neighborhoods devastated by the most powerful hurricane to hit the continental U.S. in nearly 50 years.

The death toll from Hurricane Michael’s rampage across the south-eastern United States rose to at least 18 as rescue crews spread out across the devastated Florida Panhandle in search of more victims.
Fears were growing for an untold number of people who defied orders to evacuate before the monster storm slammed into the coast on Wednesday with 155mph winds and obliterated several waterfront communities.

More than 20 million people across five states, Florida, Alabama, Georgia and the Carolinas, were under a hurricane or tropical storm warning by Tuesday evening. Florida officials said roughly 375,000 people up and down the Gulf Coast had been urged or ordered to evacuate. Evacuations spanned 22 counties from the Florida Panhandle into north central Florida. But fears lingered that some failed to heed the calls to get out of Michael’s way as the hard-charging storm began speeding north over the warm waters of the Gulf of Mexico.
The storm has claimed at least 13 lives during its northerly march through the western Caribbean and Central America.

A terrifyingly powerful Category 4 Hurricane Michael was poised to become the strongest hurricane to hit the Florida Panhandle in recorded history Wednesday, its rapid strengthening catching some by surprise and leaving anxious officials telling those who didn't evacuate: It's time to hunker down.
Michael is extremely dangerous and could further strengthen before making landfall in the Panhandle, perhaps near Panama City Beach, in the early afternoon, CNN meteorologist Chad Myers said.

A state of emergency has been declared in Florida as Tropical Storm Michael is expected to strengthen to a Category 2 hurricane with winds up to 100mph this week.

The storm is likely to make landfall in the US midweek and the National Hurricane Center has predicted it will upgrade to a hurricane as early as Monday night local time.

The Miami-based weather centre said Tropical Storm Michael is getting stronger and the “threat to the Northeastern US Gulf Coast is increasing".

It added in it's 10pm BST bulletin: “Additional strengthening is expected during the next few days, and Michael is forecast to become a hurricane Monday night or Tuesday.”

Florida Governor Rick Scott declared the state of emergency in 26 counties along the Panhandle and Big Bend coastal region to ensure there is "ample time, resources and flexibility to get prepared".

He said: "This storm will be life-threatening and extremely dangerous. If this storm hit Panama City, Tampa could still have storm surge. Every family must be prepared."

The governor was referring to two cities that are roughly 375 miles apart.

He tweeted: “Our state understands how serious tropical weather is and how devastating any hurricane or tropical storm can be.

"As we continue to monitor this storm’s path toward Florida, it is critically important that our communities have every available resource to keep everyone safe.”
