The 6.1 magnitude quake struck off the coast of Nicaragua, sparking warnings of tsunamis along the coasts of nearby Colombia, Costa Rica and Honduras.
Both the European earthquake monitoring agency (EMSC) and the Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre said there was a risk of tsunamis.
The quake's epicentre was near the Colombian island of Providencia 36 km southeast of Mountain, in Colombia, and was about 10 km deep.
