A series of 5 powerful magnitude 7.3 undersea earthquakes struck east of New Caledonia’s Loyalty Islands in the South Pacific on Monday, sending tsunamis towards New Caledonia and neighboring Vanuatu, where authorities ordered evacuations.

Todays quakes, reported as magnitude 7.0 to 7.3, struck at a shallow depth of 10 km about 82 kms east of New Caledonia. It was the fifth major tremor in the same area in just over 12 hours, following 6 tremors of 6.4 to 6.9 magnitude.
