Rancaekek Tornado

A tornado hit the Rancaekek District, Bandung Regency, West Java. In addition to hundreds of damaged houses, 16 people were injured.

"Preliminary data collected by the Bandung Regency BPBD showed that there were 1 severe wound, 15 people were lightly injured, 386 houses were damaged" said the Head of Center Data Information and Public Relations of BNPB Sutopo Purwo Nugroho through his written statement on Friday (1/11/2019).

Before the incident, the morning sunny weather, then in the afternoon many clouds formed and there were clouds of cumulonimbus which covered the area in Rancaekek and its surroundings.

The sky was cloudy and the air was hot. By late afternoon, the wind was blowing more and more fast with moderate to high intensity rain. A tornado is seen in the sky for a moment.

"The increase in tornadoes is caused by changes in land use, the impact of climate change which has caused increased instability in the dynamics of the local atmosphere, and population activities and others," Sutopo said.

The installation of refugee tents by the TNI and Brimob of the West Java Regional Police was carried out to accommodate some of the displaced people. Tagana, BPBD, and volunteers help refugees. The electricity condition is still out.

"The urgent need is temporary refugee tents, tarpaulins, lighting equipment, food ingredients, and clean water," said Sutopo.
