Storm Erik will batter the Ireland and UK with 70 mph winds and heavy rain today and tomorrow - but what time will the stormy weather arrive in Scotland and England?

Storm Erik was named by Met Eireann, the Irish Meteorological Service, ahead of its arrival on Friday.

Met Office forecasters are warning people to prepare for "quite nasty travelling conditions” in Northern Ireland and western Scotland after issuing two weather warnings for wind and rain.

Meteorologist Sarah Kent said: ”It's going to be a noticeably windy day everywhere today. And that is going to be in association with outbreaks of heavy rain too, so there will be some quite nasty travelling conditions out there this morning."

The band of low pressure responsible for Storm Erik is already swirling off the west coast of Scotland and will deepen as the day progresses.

Heavy rain has already hit Scotland, Wales and large swathes of England but downpours will turn torrential by 3pm.
